Biography

 I create paintings that reflect my observations and interpretation of people going about their everyday lives and also my passion for roses. 

I have from a young age been strongly attracted to the arts and literature and my poems have been featured in three editions of poetry compilations by the Poetry Institute of Africa.  My paintings have been featured in many exhibitions and festivals, including the Hilton Arts Festival and KZN’s Art in the Park.  I also exhibit my work in galleries, most notably the Johan Smith Gallery in Clarens and Crouse Gallery in Durban. 

In addition, my paintings are in numerous private collections, locally and internationally.  In my work, I often use contemporary ideas combined with traditional technique.  My material is sourced from digital images which I capture with my ever present camera during my travels and frequently from old and recent family photographs.  I endeavour to find the poetry within each subject I paint, to cause an emotional connection between the painting and its viewer. 

I continue to explore new ways of expression with different materials and media.  I live in Durban, South Africa with my family. 

Artist’s Statement

 In my paintings, I endeavour to capture the emotive quality in the subjects I portray.  I achieve this by variation of brushstroke, which creates movement and life and by using contrasts of light and colour in each composition.  I am an impressionist, rather than a realist, preferring the viewer to be drawn by the essence of the subject rather than by it being just a replica of real life.  I love painting people in everyday scenes and also roses, which continue to inspire me. 

My works are in private collections in South Africa, Ireland, Italy, Amsterdam, Hong Kong, Sweden, USA and the United Kingdom.  I love to have feedback, so please feel free to contact me or subscribe to my newsletter.
